    Hi Ted and everyone
    I read your help article about how to make my own scoby. I used kevita kombucha as a starter. after about 3 weeks I have a blue green mold on top. I boiled chlorinated water to make it. Does kombucha have to get air to make or should a airlock be used? thanks


    Hey Tommy, sorry to hear about your mold issue when making your own kombucha SCOBY. Mold can take root on a kombucha SCOBY if you aren’t careful. Your new SCOBY has likely formed, but has taken on some mold. The best way to prevent mold is to do your best to keep mold away from your SCOBY. Keep your kombucha away from your trash, away from plants, away from compost or moldy bread. Keeping your kombucha from getting too cold can help reduce the likelihood of mold as well. I’ve heard that cigarette smoke can negatively impact a SCOBY as well, but I can’t personally testify to that.

    I trust as well that you did add sugar to your tea along with the kombucha. If you forgot the sugar, problems could be more likely to develop.

    Kombucha is commonly made with a fine cloth cover over it. This helps prevent getting too much humidity which can cause problems as well. I haven’t heard of using an airlock with kombucha and haven’t ever found the need to try.

    The only times I’ve had mold on my SCOBY was when I had something in the vicinity that had mold and it settled onto the SCOBY.
